The Coral-Beaded Court

Price range: 70,79 € through 3308,33 € ht

A vertical procession of coral-adorned court attendants emerges from the shadows, bathed in a warm, amber-hued raking light.

From the West African Court Art collection — Eight studio homages to the royal courts of Ife and Benin, where cast bronze, coral and terracotta keep the memory of kings alive.

Description

In this striking vertical composition, the ancient pageantry of the royal court is frozen in a rhythmic dance of light and shadow. Each register reveals a tier of serene attendants, their ornate headdresses and multiple strands of coral-red beads catching a luminous glow that seems to emanate from within the deep, aged bronze patina. The repetition of the rosette motifs creates a meditative cadence, drawing the eye upward through a lineage of silent, dignified guardians of history.

Living with this work is like holding a conversation with time itself. Its deep chiaroscuro provides a grounding architectural weight, while the delicate glints on the carved faces offer a soft, human warmth. It serves as a monumental anchor for a room, bridging the gap between the ancestral and the avant-garde, turning a simple wall into a portal of quiet, regal contemplation.

Purpose

This piece seeks to evoke a sense of ancestral permanence and sacred order, using the play of light over intricate textures to honor the endurance of cultural identity and royal tradition.

Interior Decorator’s Advice

  • Place in a narrow transitional space like a hallway to emphasize its verticality and rhythmic repetition.
  • Install under a focused overhead spotlight to mimic the raking light within the image and deepen the black voids.
  • Pair with natural textures such as travertine stone, dark oak, or heavy linens to complement the earthy, bronzed palette.

Perfect For

  • Seekers of depth who value art that feels both ancient and contemporary.
  • Collectors who appreciate the intersection of high-fashion adornment and historical sculpture.
  • Minimalists looking for a single, powerful focal point that radiates warmth and authority.

From the West African Court Art collection:

Between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, the West African kingdoms of Ife and Benin perfected an art of the human face — serene, naturalistic bronze heads and jewel-bright ceremonial ornament made to honor rulers and ancestors. This collection gathers eight original studio compositions in that spirit: a bronze king, a coral-crowned oba, a terracotta sage, a courtly leopard poised in metal, a ceremonial mask held in stillness. None copies a museum object; each conjures the calm authority those courts prized, letting warm bronze and glowing coral rise from deep, near-black grounds where every bead and casting seam feels close enough to touch.

To live with these works is to keep company with dignity itself — faces and objects fashioned to outlast dynasties, carrying their quiet gravity into the everyday. The arc runs from the composed grandeur of a royal portrait to the strung splendor of regalia and the guarded threshold of palace doors, a slow procession through a world of ceremony and permanence. It is heritage rendered as presence: art that steadies a room and rewards a lifetime of looking.
