Acrylic glass, canvas and metal are the three main ways to put a photographic image on a wall — and none of them is best at everything. Acrylic face-mount gives the deepest blacks and the most depth, and is the gallery standard. Metal is the most physically durable and, in its premium form, the longest-lasting. Canvas is the warmest and the most affordable. Here is what actually separates them.

- Choose acrylic glass if the image matters more than the object — photography, fine detail, deep blacks, luminous colour. It is what museums and galleries use for exhibition prints.

- Choose canvas if you want a painterly, matte, textile surface at the lowest price — typically for painted or illustrated images rather than photographs.

Acrylic glass face-mount
A photographic print is bonded face-down to a sheet of acrylic glass with elastic silicone, then backed with an aluminium composite panel. The image sits beneath the acrylic, which acts as a protective optical layer. Acrylic transmits around 92% of visible light, slightly more than ordinary glass, which is what produces the characteristic sense of depth.
Strengths: the deepest blacks and the widest tonal range of the three; continuous tone with no visible dot pattern; the image is physically protected; it is the format used for exhibition prints in contemporary photography.
Limits: it is the most expensive; it is heavy, so large formats need a solid wall; the glossy surface reflects light, so it dislikes being hung directly opposite a window; and it cannot be repaired — a damaged piece has to be remade. It is strictly for indoor display.

Canvas
Ink is printed directly onto woven cotton or polyester canvas, which is then stretched over a wooden frame. The weave scatters light, which is why canvas never glares — and why it never resolves fine detail the way a photographic print does.
Strengths: the lowest price by a wide margin; very light, so it hangs anywhere; no reflections at all, which makes it the easiest option for a bright room; and its matte, textile surface suits painted, illustrated or heavily textured images.
Limits: longevity varies enormously with what is used. Canvas printed with dye-based inks and no protective coating can show visible fading within 5 to 10 years in indirect daylight. Pigment inks with a proper varnish last far longer. Canvas also absorbs humidity, and the fabric can slacken on its frame over time.
Metal print (dye-sublimation)
Under heat and pressure, dye is turned into gas and diffused into the polymer coating of an aluminium sheet. The image is therefore inside the coating rather than sitting on top of it, which is what makes metal prints so physically robust.
Strengths: the best resistance to humidity, heat and handling of the three; light for its size; and in its premium form the longest display life measured here — Wilhelm Imaging Research rates ChromaLuxe coated aluminium at 65 years under standard indoor display conditions.
Limits: quality varies enormously between suppliers — ordinary metal prints sit at 20 to 40 years, far below the premium figure. As a process, dye-sublimation is measurably less stable than pigment inkjet in accelerated ageing tests. Blacks are good but not as deep as a face-mounted photographic print, and mass-market metal posters are a different product altogether — that comparison is covered in Photonumerique vs Displate.
On longevity — read the numbers carefully
Display-life figures come from accelerated ageing tests, and they are only comparable when the conditions match. A rating always assumes a specific light level, temperature and humidity — change those and the number changes with them.
Two honest observations follow from the published data. First, premium metal currently posts the highest single figure of the three at 65 years. Second, the photographic paper used in acrylic face-mounts — Fujicolor Crystal Archive — is the most fade-resistant silver halide paper in production, rated around 40 years under glass, and laboratories quote 50 to 75 years once it is sealed behind acrylic, which adds a further protective layer.
In practice, all three outlast most people’s decorating decisions. Longevity is rarely the deciding factor between them; the look is. What genuinely shortens the life of any print is prolonged direct sunlight — more than a few hours a day will age any of the three faster than the ratings suggest.

Yes. A glossy acrylic surface reflects light, so an acrylic print should not hang directly facing a window or a bright lamp. Placed with indirect light it shows almost no reflection while keeping its depth. If a wall is unavoidably bright and facing a light source, canvas is the safer choice because its woven surface scatters light and produces no glare at all.
It can be, but the weave softens fine detail and limits black density, so photographs lose sharpness and contrast compared with a photographic print. Canvas suits painted, illustrated or heavily textured images, where the fabric surface adds to the effect. For detailed photography, acrylic face-mount or a framed photographic print will show considerably more of the image.
Both use aluminium, but not the same quality. A dye-sublimation metal print on premium coated aluminium is a professional product rated up to 65 years. Mass-market metal posters use thinner sheets and simpler coatings, and sit far lower on display life. The word “metal” alone says nothing about durability — the coating and the process determine it.
Acrylic face-mounting is the standard for contemporary photography exhibitions, and has been since the technique spread through the art world in the 1980s. It is chosen for the depth and the tonal range it gives large prints, and because the acrylic protects the image. Canvas and metal appear far less often in photographic exhibitions, though both are common in decorative and commercial contexts.
Metal tolerates humidity best of the three and is the only realistic candidate for a damp room. Canvas should be avoided in bathrooms, as the fabric absorbs moisture and can slacken or develop mould. Acrylic face-mounts are designed for indoor display in normal conditions, around 18 to 24°C and 40 to 60% relative humidity. None of the three is intended for outdoor use.
Acrylic: a damp microfibre cloth only — never alcohol or window cleaner, which can micro-crack the surface over time. Metal: a damp cloth, and it tolerates handling well. Canvas: a dry soft brush or a light dusting, since moisture can mark the fabric and any varnish. In all three cases, avoid solvents entirely.
