There is a moment, around the fourteenth century in the workshops of Florence, Siena and Assisi, when European painting stopped being a flat golden sign and began to breathe. Bodies gained weight, cloth fell into real folds, faces turned toward one another with grave, inward feeling. This collection is an homage to that threshold — the generation of Giotto and the Sienese masters — spoken entirely in original, invented scenes. Nothing here copies a famous fresco or altarpiece; instead, the period’s language is spoken freshly, so you meet the birth of an era rather than a postcard of it.

Across the eight works the eye travels from burnished gold grounds and blue robes ground from stone to the chalky seams of lime plaster, the punched ornament of a halo, the small losses that reveal the red drawing beneath.
