The production — subtraction as technique
The art director’s brief was one of removal: no set, no props, no colour — only the form, the fall of the light, and the negative space around it. Timeless Simplicity (inspired by Richard Avedon) works the stark white ground; Graceful Curves (inspired by Irving Penn) and Contours in Shadow (inspired by Herb Ritts) find sculpture in the turn of a shoulder; Shadow Dance (inspired by Helmut Newton) lets the shadow become the second figure. Acrylic glass is the right finish for this discipline: it holds the deep blacks without crushing them and keeps the tonal gradations that are, in a body of work this reduced, the entire content of the image.
