Ultramarine and Crimson

Price range: 70,79 € through 3308,33 € ht

A masterwork of pure colorito where lapis-saturated silk and gold-threaded brocade rest in the soft, fading light of a Venetian dusk.

From the Venetian Renaissance collection — Eight invented pictures glowing with the warm colour and golden lagoon light of sixteenth-century Venice, where form is born of tone, never of line.

Description

This composition is an exquisite meditation on texture and the behavior of light, stripping away the figure to focus entirely on the dialogue between ultramarine and oxblood. The heavy, lustrous folds of silk and the intricate patterns of the pomegranate brocade cascade over a weathered Istrian stone ledge, a testament to the tactile splendor of the sixteenth-century Venetian school. The presence of a delicate glass bowl and a string of freshwater pearls offers a moment of quiet stillness, grounding the sweeping drama of the fabrics.

Living with this work is like capturing a fragment of a grand altarpiece and holding it in the private intimacy of one’s own space. It does not demand attention through narrative, but rather through its profound atmospheric weight. The deep glazes and visible canvas weave create a sense of historical permanence, making it an anchor of gravitas for any interior that values the interplay of deep color and classical restraint.

Purpose

This work seeks to express the emotional power of color and material without the distraction of a subject, evoking the sensory abundance of the High Renaissance through light, shadow, and texture alone.

Interior Decorator’s Advice

  • Place this work in a room with warm, directional lighting to accentuate the depth of the translucent glazes.
  • Frame it in a dark, traditional wood or a distressed gold leaf to echo the gold threads within the crimson brocade.
  • Position it as a focal point in a library or a study where its contemplative, hushed mood can be fully absorbed.
  • Pair it with architectural elements like stone, velvet, or dark cabinetry to enhance its material presence.

Perfect For

  • The discerning scholar of art history who appreciates the technical mastery of the Old Masters.
  • Collectors seeking a sense of quiet luxury and historical depth for their sanctuary.
  • Those who find beauty in the tactile details and the silent stories told by objects of virtue.

From the Venetian Renaissance collection:

Venice built its painting the way it built its fortune, out of colour carried in on trading ships and light poured off the water. This collection is an homage to that world, invented from first brush to last, in the manner the city perfected between roughly 1470 and 1580, when its painters set the drawn line aside and let form emerge from warm tone, glaze laid over glaze, a red-brown ground smouldering up through every shadow.

Across a portrait, a storm at the edge of the world, a table of instruments, a fall of crimson drapery, a ceiling opening onto cloud, a lagoon at dusk, a gothic palace on the water and a frankly unfinished sketch, the series holds one temperature and one light. Nothing is outlined, nothing is cold. Velvet reds, lapis blue, bronze green and gold catch a late golden hour while the distance melts into rose haze, so the whole set reads as one warm room of Venetian air waiting to gather around you.
