Hommage à Pierre et Gilles: Réinventer la Fantaisie — Devotion, Colour and Glitter

La Sirène Mystérieuse

This collection is an homage: a set of entirely original works made in the spirit of a celebrated French duo’s painted-photograph tradition. It reproduces nothing, and claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement.

The need

Some interiors want the opposite of restraint. Dressing rooms, boutique spaces, bold living rooms and anywhere with a sense of humour can carry saturated, frankly theatrical figuration — work that is unashamed of being beautiful.

The production

The vocabulary is deliberately excessive: hand-tinted colour, painted backdrops, halos, flowers and frontal, devotional poses that borrow from religious icons and hold them somewhere between reverence and camp. The Goddess of the Forest and The King of Flowers work with botanical overload; The Ice Queen and The Magician of the Stars with jewel colour and staged light. The Mysterious Siren, Bird of Paradise and The Enchanted Garden complete a set where nothing is understated and everything is meant.

The sale

Work this saturated needs a plain room around it — white or single deep colour, minimal furniture — or the whole thing becomes noise. Acrylic glass is the right partner: the glossy surface pushes the colour further, which is entirely in keeping with the tradition. One piece is a statement; two is a manifesto.
