Surrealism was invented to escape the tyranny of the plausible. A century later most of what carries the name has become oddly well-behaved. This collection lets it off the lead again.
The need
Rooms that already have a strong identity — a study, a library, a collector’s wall — can carry work with no fixed subject, where the pleasure is interpretive rather than decorative. These are pieces that reward being lived with rather than glanced at.
The production
The set moves from figure to pure form. Surrealist Portrait of a Woman and Threefold Reverie keep a human anchor; Rivers of Pulled Color and Liquid Architecture abandon it for matter in motion. The Improbable Sphere and Beyond All Probability take the geometry into impossibility, while Pearl of the Cosmos and Celestial Companion close the collection at the largest scale it reaches.
The sale
Abstract and surreal work is the easiest to live with because it makes no demands about the room around it, and the hardest to sell in words — it has to be seen. Show a single piece at real size; the detail and the colour transitions are the argument. Acrylic glass carries the saturated passages and the deep grounds without dulling either.
